Step 1 — Find Your Contract End Date

Before doing anything else, locate your original membership agreement and confirm your contract end date. For Orangetheory, the minimum term is Monthly — no long-term lock-in on standard memberships. If you're unsure, call or visit your home club and ask — they are required to tell you. Write the date down before contacting them.

Step 2 — Give Written Notice

Orangetheory NZ cancellations must be submitted in writing to your home studio. You cannot cancel via the app or the Orangetheory website — contact your studio directly. Send your notice with enough lead time to cover the notice period of 30 days written notice. Your notice period starts from the date the gym receives your notice — not when you send it. Always use email so you have a timestamp and a record.

Step 3 — Use This Cancellation Email Template

Copy and paste this template. Fill in the [brackets].

Subject: Membership Cancellation — [Your Full Name] To: [Your Orangetheory studio email] Hi Orangetheory [Studio Location] team, I am requesting cancellation of my Orangetheory membership effective [date — 30 days from today]. Member name: [Your full name] Email on account: [Your email] Studio: [Your home studio] Membership type: [Basic / Elite / Premier — from your agreement] Please confirm my cancellation in writing including my final billing date. Kind regards, [Your name]

Step 4 — Get Written Confirmation

Do not consider your cancellation complete until Orangetheory confirms it in writing. Reply to ask for confirmation if you don't receive it within 3 business days. If the club is unresponsive, escalate in writing to Orangetheory's national customer service team. Keep every email.

Step 5 — Cancel Your Direct Debit (At the Right Time)

Only cancel your bank direct debit after you have received written confirmation from Orangetheory that your membership has ended. Cancelling before this point is treated as non-payment. Orangetheory charges weekly or monthly by direct debit. Cancel your bank authority only after receiving written confirmation of your membership end date.

Your Rights Under NZ Consumer Law

Orangetheory membership agreements are covered by NZ Consumer Law. Monthly members have the right to cancel with 30 days notice at any time. If Orangetheory attempts to charge beyond your confirmed cancellation date, you have the right to dispute those charges with your bank and file a complaint with the Commerce Commission.

The NZ Commerce Commission has guidance on unfair contract terms — gym contracts that automatically roll over without clear notice, or that charge excessive cancellation fees, may fall foul of the Fair Trading Act 1986. If you believe you're being charged unfairly, contact the Commerce Commission or lodge a dispute with the Disputes Tribunal (free to use for claims under $30,000).
