How to Cancel Les Mills NZ Membership — Step-by-Step 2026

Cancelling a Les Mills membership in New Zealand is straightforward as long as you know which type of membership you hold and follow the right steps. Les Mills has three very different products — full club (gym) membership, the Les Mills+ on-demand app, and class passes — and each cancels differently. Club memberships have a 3-month minimum term and require written notice; the app cancels through your app store; class passes simply expire. This guide covers the process for each, the notice period, early-exit and medical waivers, suspension vs cancellation, and your rights under NZ consumer law.

First: Which Les Mills Membership Do You Have?

Les Mills sells three distinct products, and the cancellation method depends entirely on which you hold:

  • Club (gym) membership — physical access to a Les Mills club. This is the one with a 3-month minimum term and a direct debit. Cancel via the member portal or in person (see below).
  • Les Mills+ (on-demand app) — streaming workouts at home, billed as an app subscription. Cancel through your App Store or Google Play account, not at a club.
  • Class passes / casual passes — pre-paid bundles of class entries. These have no ongoing billing and simply expire, so there's usually nothing to cancel.

If you're being charged a fortnightly direct debit, you almost certainly have a club membership — read the gym-membership steps next.

How to Cancel a Les Mills Club (Gym) Membership

Step 1 — Check your minimum term. Les Mills club memberships have a 3-month minimum. If you've been a member for less than 3 months, you'll either pay out the remainder or wait until it ends. Log in to the member portal or call your club to confirm your start date.

Step 2 — Submit your cancellation. Two accepted methods: (1) online — log in to the Les Mills member portal at lesmills.co.nz, open membership settings and submit a cancellation request; or (2) in person — visit your home club and complete a cancellation form with staff. A casual phone call is not accepted as formal notice; if you email, send it to your specific home club and request written acknowledgement.

Step 3 — Serve the notice period. After the 3-month minimum, Les Mills requires 14 days written notice. You'll be billed for roughly two more weeks and keep access during that time.

Step 4 — Get written confirmation of your end date and final payment, and only then cancel your bank direct debit.

How to Cancel Les Mills+ (On-Demand App)

The Les Mills+ streaming app is billed as a normal app subscription, so you cancel it through whichever store you signed up with — not at a club and not via the member portal.

  • iPhone / iPad: Settings → tap your name → Subscriptions → Les Mills+ → Cancel Subscription.
  • Android: Google Play → profile icon → Payments & subscriptions → Subscriptions → Les Mills+ → Cancel.
  • Signed up on the web: log in at lesmills.com/plus, go to account/billing, and cancel there.

Cancelling stops the next renewal; you keep access until the end of the period you've already paid for. App-store subscriptions are not refunded for partial periods.

Cancelling During the 3-Month Minimum Term

To leave before the 3-month club minimum is up, you'll typically pay out the remaining weekly fees. Les Mills may waive this in specific circumstances:

  • Medical / injury — with a doctor's letter confirming you can't exercise.
  • Significant relocation — moving to an area with no Les Mills club.
  • Financial hardship / redundancy — at management discretion.

Contact your club's membership team directly to discuss — outcomes vary and are at the club's discretion.

Suspending vs Cancelling

Going overseas, injured, or having a quiet period? Les Mills lets you suspend a club membership for a small weekly fee (typically a few dollars instead of your full rate). This pauses rather than ends the membership — your direct debit continues at the reduced rate and you keep your joining history, so you don't re-pay a joining fee later. A suspension is not a cancellation. Ask your club for current suspension terms and the maximum hold period.

Fees, Refunds & Your Rights Under NZ Consumer Law

Les Mills membership contracts are covered by NZ consumer law. Key points:

  • The 3-month minimum must have been clearly disclosed at signup. If a sales rep misrepresented the terms verbally, you may have grounds to challenge the contract under the Fair Trading Act.
  • Joining fees are non-refundable; the notice-period fortnight is still charged even if you don't attend.
  • Medical cancellations during the minimum term must be allowed for genuine medical reasons with a doctor's certificate.
  • If you're charged after your confirmed final payment date, request a refund and, if unresolved, raise a direct debit dispute with your bank.
