Your Rights Under NZ Consumer Law
ClassPass is a US company operating under NZ Consumer Law for NZ subscribers. As a monthly digital subscription, you have the right to cancel at any time. Unused credits are non-refundable under standard terms, but if ClassPass has failed to deliver a service you paid for (studio closed, class cancelled), you may request a refund or credit.
The NZ Commerce Commission has guidance on unfair contract terms — gym contracts that automatically roll over without clear notice, or that charge excessive cancellation fees, may fall foul of the Fair Trading Act 1986. If you believe you're being charged unfairly, contact the Commerce Commission or lodge a dispute with the Disputes Tribunal (free to use for claims under $30,000).
Common Problems and How to Handle Them
- Subscription auto-renewed before you cancelled — ClassPass sends renewal reminders by email. If you missed it and were charged, contact ClassPass support within 48 hours and request a refund for the unused period.
- Can't find the cancel button — in the app: tap your profile icon → Settings → Membership → Cancel. On desktop: Account → Membership Plan → Cancel plan. If it's not showing, your account may be on a promotional or gift plan with different terms.
- Credits disappeared after cancellation — unused ClassPass credits expire at the end of your billing period when you cancel. Use them before cancelling or roll to a lower-credit plan first.
- Studios showing as unavailable — some studios are removed from ClassPass periodically. This doesn't entitle you to a refund but you can contact support to request a plan adjustment.
