How to Cancel City Fitness NZ (3 Methods)
City Fitness has no lock-in beyond the short minimum term, so cancelling is straightforward as long as you give proper written notice. There are three ways to do it.
Method 1 — Online via the member portal. Log in to your City Fitness member account (or the app). Look under Membership or Account settings for a cancellation or "end membership" request form. Submit it and screenshot the confirmation. Not every club exposes a self-service cancel button, so if you can't find one, use Method 2 or 3.
Method 2 — In person at your home club. Visit the club where you signed up, ask the front desk for a cancellation form, complete it on the spot, and keep a stamped or signed copy. This is the most reliable method because you walk away with proof.
Method 3 — Email / phone. Send a written cancellation request by email to your home club (see the template below) or call the club to start the process — but always follow a phone call up in writing. Whatever method you use, the four steps are the same: (1) confirm you've completed your 4-week minimum, (2) submit your cancellation with the required notice, (3) get written confirmation of your final payment date, and (4) only cancel your direct debit once that final payment has cleared.
City Fitness Cancellation Terms & Notice Period
City Fitness typically requires 2–4 weeks written notice to cancel. Your direct debit continues through that notice window after you submit your request, so timing matters: submit before your next billing date if you want to avoid an extra fortnightly charge.
Billing stops at the end of your notice period, not the day you ask. Your membership stays active — you can keep training — right up to your final payment date. Check your individual membership agreement for the exact notice figure, as it can vary slightly by club and membership type.
Direct debit: never cancel the direct debit through your bank before City Fitness confirms your final charge. Cancelling early can leave a payment to bounce, which may trigger a dishonour fee or mark your account as in arrears.
Cooling-off rights: under the NZ Consumer Guarantees Act and Fair Trading Act, if you signed up under pressure or were misled about the terms, you may have grounds to exit without the standard notice. For a normal change of mind, the standard notice period applies.
Cancellation Fees & Refunds
Once you've completed the 4-week minimum, there are no exit fees for cancelling City Fitness — one of the biggest advantages over 12-month contract gyms.
- Joining fee: the one-off joining fee is non-refundable, even if you cancel shortly after joining.
- Pro-rata billing: City Fitness bills fortnightly in advance, so you generally pay for the full period you're in and are not refunded for unused days within an already-paid fortnight.
- Charged after cancelling? If money comes out after your confirmed final payment date, email your club immediately with your written confirmation attached and request a refund of the erroneous charge. If they don't resolve it, your bank can reverse an unauthorised direct debit.

Alternatives to Cancelling
Before you cancel outright, check whether one of these options suits you better — they keep your joining fee and history intact:
- Freeze / suspend: City Fitness lets you put your membership on hold for injury, travel, or financial hardship, usually for a small weekly hold fee far below the full rate. Ideal if you'll be back within a few months.
- Downgrade: if cost is the issue, move from a Black Card (multi-club) to a single-club Basic membership to lower your fortnightly fee.
- Transfer / multi-club: moving cities? The Black Card membership already covers City Fitness clubs nationwide, so you may not need to cancel at all — just train at your new local club.
Tips for a Smooth Cancellation
- Always get written confirmation of your cancellation date and final payment
- Don't cancel your direct debit before your final payment has been taken
- Cancel in person at the club where possible — a signed form is more reliable than email alone
- Submit before your next billing date to avoid an extra fortnight's charge
- Keep a record of all correspondence in case of billing errors
- Moving cities? Check for a City Fitness club there before cancelling — Black Card is multi-club
