How Minimum Terms Work

A minimum term means you're committed to paying for that period regardless of whether you use the gym. After the minimum term, most contracts roll to a month-to-month arrangement โ€” but you usually need to give 30 days notice before the minimum term ends to avoid auto-renewal. Anytime Fitness and Les Mills are the most common gyms with 12-month minimums in NZ. City Fitness, Jetts, Snap Fitness and ClassPass have no meaningful lock-in.

Price Increase Clauses

Most NZ gym contracts include a clause allowing price increases, typically tied to CPI (inflation) or a fixed annual percentage (e.g. up to 5%). The gym must give you notice (usually 30 days) before increasing your rate. Under the Fair Trading Act, if the increase is significant and not clearly disclosed, you may have grounds to cancel. Always read the specific wording โ€” some contracts cap increases at CPI, others don't cap at all.

The Safest Gyms for Contracts

If you're cautious about commitments, stick to gyms with no lock-in or very short minimum terms: City Fitness (4 weeks), Jetts (none), Snap Fitness (none), ClassPass (monthly). You'll pay slightly more per week but have complete flexibility.
