What is the Exercise NZ subsidised gym scheme?
Who is eligible?
- New Zealand citizens or permanent residents
- Aged 14 years or older
- Low‑to‑moderate income earners (based on IRD tax code)
- Students (full‑time tertiary or secondary)
- Unemployed or on benefit support
- Pensioners receiving superannuation
- People with a disability that limits mobility
How to claim your discount – step by step
- 1. Register on the Exercise NZ portal (https://exercise.org.nz) and create a personal account.
- 2. Verify your eligibility by uploading the required documents – e.g., IRD notice of assessment, student ID, benefit statement or pension card.
- 3. Choose a participating gym from the list provided on the portal.
- 4. The system will generate a unique discount code linked to your account.
- 5. Take the code to the gym’s reception or email it to their membership team. They will apply the discount to your contract.
- 6. Sign the membership agreement – note that most gyms still require a minimum 12‑month contract unless you opt for a no‑contract provider.
